Snorri
A typeface based on ancient Nordic and Icelandic texts
The design of this face was inspired by the runestones found all over Norway, Iceland, and the Northeastern part of Canada. These stones were left behind by Vikings to mark special locations, commemorate events, or tell stories. The Viking runes have a very unique and recognizable look to them, and because they were such prolific explorers, have spread all over Europe and North America. Many of these stones have not been deciphered, and so there is a mysterious aspect to some of these anciet relics. This typeface is intended to bring that unique syle and mysterious qulity to face that you can actually read.
The name of this typeface comes from a well known Icelandic explorer. Snorri Thorfinnsson was the first European baby born in America. Born to an Icelandic family trying to settle in the area of Newfoundland in the year 1004, he returned to Iceland and became an important historical figure there. Discovery of his home in Iceland a decade ago gives credit to this tale, meaning his birth predates the prevously thought first European born in America by half a century.
